The Sunshine Coast senior swim team is in full swing preparing for its participation in the 25th anniversary of the BC Senior Games in Burnaby, Aug. 21 to 25.
More than 3,500 athletes are expected to attend.
"Our team has lost a few of our medal winners from the 2011 Games; however, we have had an injection of new and able talent to our team," said Bruce McDonald. "Although participation is the main aim of the Sunshine Coast swim team together with the opportunity to meet athletes from all over British Columbia, we are also hoping to maintain our success in bringing our share of medals to the Coast. We are confident that we shall exceed our total medal count in 2011."
Last year the team returned with 53 medals: 25 gold, 14 silver and 14 bronze.
During the four years that the team has competed in the BC Senior Games, they have garnered a total of 104 medals: 40 gold, 31 silver and 33 bronze.
The Sunshine Coast was represented by one swimmer in 2008, six swimmers in 2009, nine swimmers in 2010, 12 swimmers in 2011 and this year will feature 11 swimmers on the Zone 4 swim team, four males and seven females.
The swimmers are Bruce McDonald, Jack Adams, Siemion Altman, Warren McCrimmon, Linda Buckingham, Linda Duff, Lucille Oakey, Marilyn Adams, Mary Pinniger, Mary Kay Wyman and Sandra Buckingham.
Zone 4 is the largest zone in the province, comprised of athletes from Burnaby, Delta, Ladner, New Westminster, North and West Vancouver, Rich-mond, Tsawwassen, Vancouver, Squamish, Whistler and the Sunshine Coast.
"The majority of our team has been training throughout the winter. Our team is now in full competition mode with regular training sessions at the Sechelt Aquatic Centre, under the expert coaching of Pat Dickie of the Sunshine Coast Regional District," McDonald added.
