Halfmoon Bay's Avery Struck continued her strong season of play with a sixth place finish at last week's Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour stop at the Northview Golf and Country Club in Surrey.
Day one at the Canal course on July 3 saw some of the worst conditions that any golfer should have to endure. Heavy rain and extreme winds made it challenging for all the junior golfers.
Day two was again on the Canal course. The weather was great and the competition was fierce. Avery broke through with a sizzling 79 to put her solidly in fifth place and make the cut line.
The final day saw the juniors play on the famous Ridge course.
Competition again was intense and saw Avery and one other girl in her group fighting for fifth and sixth spots within one stroke of each other on the final hole.
This week Avery was in Osoyoos for the B.C. Junior Girls Championships.
On Tuesday she fired a first round score of 81 (+9) and was in a three-way tie for 20th spot.
Dempster wins in return
Gibsons' Ryan Dempster returned to the Chicago Cubs line-up on Sunday, pitching five innings of four-hit ball as the Cubs beat the New York Mets 7-0.
Dempster extended his scoreless innings streak to 27 in his first start in three weeks He was activated from the disabled list in his first outing since June 15, when he experienced tightness in a back muscle. His lengthy string of zeros is the Cubs' best for a starter since Ken Holtzman went 27 innings in 1971. Dempster improved to 4-3 on the season.
The Cubs made it as comfortable as possible for Dempster, scoring four runs before he even threw a pitch. Alfonso Soriano had an RBI single, Jeff Baker a run-scoring double with a jam shot to the opposite field, and Geovany Soto drove in two runs with a single against Jonathon Niese.
