Strong showing at provincials for Elphi

Athletes from Elphinstone Secondary School continued their impressive track and field season with a strong showing at last weekend's provincial finals in Burnaby.

Athletes from Elphinstone Secondary School continued their impressive track and field season with a strong showing at last weekend's provincial finals in Burnaby.

Elphi had a total of five top-10 performances including three top-eight finishes at the two-day event.

"I was quite happy with the team's results," said Elphi coach Tom Daniels. "They're a young group [Grade 9 and 10] and the provincials is an open-age category event. Most competitors are seniors [Grades 11 and 12]. There were approximately 25 to 30 competitors in each event."

Jenna Nestman led the way for Elphi, finishing fourth in the 400m hurdles in a new personal-best time of 66.47.Jenna also competed in the multi-event provincial championships the weekend before (May 28 to 29) in Abbotsford. This event includes seven events over the two days (100m hurdles, shot put, high jump, 200m, long jump, javelin and 800m). She finished eighth overall out of 21 competitors from around the province and had five personal-best performances over the two days.

Brianna Kane finished tenth at the provincials in the 400m with a time of 60.54 - 0.4 seconds away from making it to the finals.

The 4x100 relay team of Rachel Van Wersch, Brianna, Kyla Richey and Jenna finished fourth overall with a new Elphi school record of 50.72, while the 4x400 relay team of Brianna, Kyla, Marlice Josephson and Jenna finished ninth overall with a new school record of 4:11.07.

"Kyla competed with her arm in a cast and it didn't seem to slow her down one bit," Daniels added.

Other results included Marlice, 400m in a time of 63.34; Sam Lyons, javelin, 38.16m; and Katrina Jones in a time of 6:22.72 in the 1,500m steeplechase.

Chatelech's Doug Saunders also had a solid weekend with a 33.52m result in the discus and 40.94m effort in the javelin.
