After a soothing long-awaited rain here in the desert of the north, Kinnikinnick field was ready with some green grass and nervous energy as the Sunshine Coast U15 Storm girls soccer team welcomed their first opponents of the year, the New Westminster Rangers.

A really exciting change of roster for the girls’ team this year as more of our awesome talent was lured away to the big city teams, making way for some fresh faces and new skill sets for coach Trina Giesbrecht to utilize for the coming year.

Every great team anywhere in the world evolves and changes – the shape that comes out of that change decides the dynamic and success.

After watching the first half blow by and the veteran team members welcoming the new girls and the new girls staking their claim, it seemed inevitable that something special has come together here. It was clearly a familiarization first half with new energy uncertain how to proceed but experienced players showing them the way. It was very tight indeed and the Rangers were not going away without a fight.

Then after the half, the flood gates seemed to open, the obvious talent of the veteran Storm girls were boosting the hard-working skilled newcomers into a frenzy of cooperation that put through balls exactly where they should be, passes from side to side and down the line, support and communication from everyone and a little magical breeze seemed to blow through Sechelt to put a smile on every face watching this unfold.

The final score put the Storm girls up 4-1 and certainly gave the fans, and hopefully the entire team, a real sense of undeniable potential for this newly formed group of soccer players. The city teams need be scared of what is coming.
