Stephens-Whale off to Wales

Roberts Creek's Shaun Stephens-Whales is in Wales as part of Team Canada joining former Coaster Kristin Ohm-Pedersen for the Commonwealth Running Championships.

Stephens-Whale is coming off his best season ever, overall victories in the Five Peak Running Series, Canadian Xterra Trail Champion, top snowshoe racer in Canada, as well as the fastest stair-climber in North America this year.

Racing in different countries has its own set of difficulties, the terrain in Wales is different than the B.C. mountains; instead of steep gnarly inclines, the mountains in Llandris are gentler which means a faster pace is essential to keep up, the course, usually open fields and goat tracks is impossible to run if the rains come as they do in Wales, traction is everything, special knobby shoes that grip the mud such as the (Inov 8 190s) he will be wearing. They are 6.8 oz super lights and 80 per cent of the racers will be in these shoes. The course will be an up-and-down event.

The advantage goes to the strongest, bravest downhillers whose pace can only be described as suicidal. The race starts and finishes in this small town, most of the course will be well watched as masses of people string up the mountain to encourage their favourites on.

Junior golf tour

Young golfers took advantage of the last good weather day of fall on Saturday, Sept. 24, and carded some outstanding scores in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour's MJT British Columbia Fall One-Day Series at Pitt Meadows Golf Club in Pitt Meadows.

Trevor Smith, 16, from Roberts Creek, competed in the boys 14 to 16 age division and finished in a tie for 24th after carding a score of 106.
