Sports camps open for registration

Summer sports camps for basketball and volleyball players are fast approaching. Basketball camps will be held July 18 to 22 for grades 1 to 4 at Halfmoon Bay Elementary School from 10 a.m.

Summer sports camps for basketball and volleyball players are fast approaching.

Basketball camps will be held July 18 to 22 for grades 1 to 4 at Halfmoon Bay Elementary School from 10 a.m. to noon and July 25 to 29 for grades 1 to 4 at Cedar Grove Elementary School from 10 a.m. to noon. Fees for camps are $60 and include a T-shirt and ball.

The next camp is July 18 to 22 for grades 5 to 7 at Chatelech Secondary School from 1 to 4 p.m. and is $85. Girls grades 8 to 12 runs July 25 to 29 at Chat from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is $99 and for boys grades 8 to 12, July 25 to 29 at Chat from 1:15 to 5:15 p.m., is $99.

The coaching staff this year includes Don Van Os, coach of the Terry Fox Ravens boys' basketball team. Van Os has been the head coach of the camps since day one. Mike Hind, the former executive director of Basketball BC and coach of the Terry Fox senior boys, has also been a head coach at the camps since day one. Also coaching is Ellen Thomas, a Capilano College varsity grad who holds 17 years of coaching experience at the high school level.

Volleyball camps will be held Aug. 22 to 25 for grades 4 to 6 at West Sechelt Elementary School from 9:30 to 11: 30 a.m. and is $55, for grades 7 and 8 at Chat from 9 a.m. to noon and for grades 9 to 12 at Chat from 1 to 4 p.m. Fees for both of the senior camps at Chat are $80.

Coaches include Jesse Knight, head coach of the University of Calgary national silver medalists in 2009, and Jan Richey, B.C. Sports Hall of Fame member and former national champion with the University of British Columbia.
