The Special Olympic athlete's oath is Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.
Last Saturday, Jan. 28, at Elphinstone Secondary School, eight teams played in a round robin basketball tournament that truly exemplified the athletes' oath.
Campbell River left home at 5 a.m. on a rented bus with two very excited basketball teams. Their enthusiastic playing resulted in a second place showing. Two North Shore teams in their new black and red uniforms finished first and third. The other teams that took part were from Coquitlam, Gibsons, Sechelt and Surrey.
Thank you to the organizers Samantha Mills and Laurie Miller, coaches of the Gibsons team.
We are fortunate that so many wonderful volunteers were there to help support Special Olympics, said Sunshine Coast Special Olympics co-ordinator Pat Stuart. First aid attendants, timekeepers, scorekeepers, coaches and official referees all contributed greatly to the success of the event.
Stuart offered special thanks to Bob Hoy of MarketPlace IGA for donating hot dogs for the athletes and to all the volunteers who helped with the concession, and thanks to the Town of Gibsons for donating pins for the visiting athletes.
Everyone was delighted with the Sunshine Coast's hospitality and the half-time show provided by Margret Casey's hip-hop dance group was joyful and well received, Stuart said.
