It's back to the drawing board for Sunshine Coast United U12 boys' rep team after an 8-0 defeat to the Richmond City Spartans at Piccadilly Park last Saturday. Coach Rick McGuire's boys will need to take it easy on the Halloween candy Friday because they're on the 6:20 a.m. ferry Saturday for a road game versus Cuthbert United in Burnaby. Kick-off is 8:30 a.m. Ouch!
U12 girlsThe SC Vipers had a slow start to their game on Sunday against the Douglas Park Pumas. Once they woke up, the Vipers managed to take the lead with a great low shot from Leah Ewert, hitting the far post and deflecting in. The Pumas fought back and soon followed up with a goal of their own.
With the Vipers showing great energy and attack, they found their second goal from Leah as she tapped in the rebound when the Pumas keeper couldn't handle a fantastic 30-yard free kick by centre back Zoey Schutz. Shortly after, the Pumas managed to get through the Vipers strong back line, to find the back of the net to tie the game 2-2.
The second half featured outstanding play by all. Vipers' keeper Dani Pazur managed to stop everything that came her way. The Vipers had many opportunities to take the lead, but just couldn't seal the deal in the 2-2 final.
U11 boysThe spoils of victory were denied the Sunshine Coast Wave last weekend as the CAU vanquished them 7-2 at Willingdon Heights. Up against a more cohesive team and a potentially demeaning loss, the Wave maintained composure, confirmed their sportsmanship, and together, they tackled and toiled in pursuit of triumph. In the first half the Wave suffered an onslaught of shots. Many were saved, but the CAU drove in a number of well-placed goals. Up 5-0 at the start of the second half, CAU scored another goal before the Wave brought a stormy rush of effort to the pitch that featured fabulous hustle from Graydon Inksater, Cassius Joe and Leif Magnussen. Gabriel Chamberlain took over in the Wave's net in the second half and proved himself time and again. Logan Nattall, Jordy Fawcett and Jagger Campbell applied relentless defensive pressure to CAU forwards and opened a gap that Quin Towert filled with a welcome goal for the Wave. Once on the scoreboard, the Wave picked up the pace. Kai Moore, Keenan Flemming and Jasper Deasey bucked off some pursuing CAU players and passed to Liam Rankin, who slammed another goal home for the Wave.
Despite the defeat, the Wave survived, learned lessons and will be playing this Saturday on the Coast at Piccadilly Park.
U13 girlsInferno picked up an impressive 2-1 win against the ICSF Rowdies from Vancouver last weekend.
Morgan Downie played a strong game, using her fancy footwork and smart passing to advantage, and Sydney Downie managed to shut down the Rowdies in the midfield by sticking with her check. Kayli Dunk worked hard the entire game, hammering a goal into the back of the net late in the first half, intuitively being in the right place to strike off a rebound. Kayli almost scored a second time later in the game. Sophie Garmulewicz received a nice through ball from Talia Barnum and used her speed to capitalize on a breakaway to score with a well-placed shot. The Inferno had the majority of the ball possession and shots on goal and demonstrated how to be a team that plays with intensity and class.
U18 boysLegacy drew Kerrisdale for the first round of cup play last weekend and came out on the right end of a 2-1 score.
After a scoreless first half, minutes into the second half, KP Hlatky scored with an excellent pass from Connor Richey in front of the goal. Legacy continued to pressure, and with excellent setup passes from James Van't Schip, Nate Lussier and Andrew Kraus, Eli Paradis scored with his left foot from within the box.
Kerrisdale was awarded a red card and were playing one man down from about halfway through the second half, but ended up scoring shortly after that. In the last five minutes, Sam Hilsted made some amazing saves off Kerrisdale shots. One rang off the crossbar and then another shot was saved by Sam jumping up through a crowd of players.
