Skate Club receives grant money

Sogo Active is challenging youth on the Coast to be more active.

Sogo Active is challenging youth on the Coast to be more active. The group has awarded the Sunshine Coast Skating Club with $500 in grants to help fund two families with financial barriers, allowing two children to participate in the club's spring learn-to-skate program.

"The Sunshine Coast Skating Club is extremely grateful to Coca-Cola and Parti-cipACTION for awarding us with a Sogo Active grant," said club rep Jill-Marie Jarvis. "This grant will help us continue promoting physically active lifestyles and healthy choices for youth in our community, regardless of their financial situation, and help motivate kids to get moving."

Sogo Active is a $5 million, five-year national active living program sponsored by Coca-Cola Canada and created and managed by ParticipACTION. As Canadian youth are facing a physical inactivity crisis - only seven per cent of them meeting Canada's physical activity guidelines of at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day - Sogo Active works to inspire youth to incorporate physical activity into their day-to-day lives.

The program provides micro grants to local community organizations that create or host youth-inspired physical activity events or 'challenges' that get young people active.

The skate club will use this grant to provide the full costs of a full spring program, running from April 3 to May 17 at the Sunshine Coast Arena in Sechelt.

CanSkate is the only nationally recognized learn-to-skate program in Canada and is run solely by the skate club and their NCCP certified coaching staff. The CanSkate program prepares skaters for all other based ice sports, teaching basic skills. It allows kids to move on to figure skating, ringette or hockey (CanPowerskate), speed skating or simply skating for recreation and health.

The Sunshine Coast Regional District has generously agreed to supply rental skates and helmets for those receiving the grant. There are two grants available; applications can be found on the bulletin boards at either arena, by contacting the club at: [email protected] or calling club president Joanne Bennison at 604-885-0406.
