Sogo Active is challenging youth on the Coast to be more active, and has awarded the Sunshine Coast Skating Club (SCSC) with $500 in grants to help fund one or two families with financial barriers, allowing their children to participate in the club's fall skating programs.
"The Sunshine Coast Skating Club is extremely grateful to Coca-Cola and ParticipACTION for awarding us with a Sogo Active grant," said club representative Jill-Marie Jarvis. "This grant will help us continue promoting physically active lifestyles and healthy choices for youth in our community, regardless of their financial situation, and help motivate kids to get moving more."
Sogo Active is a $5-million, five-year national active living program sponsored by Coca-Cola Canada and created and managed by ParticipACTION. As Canadian youth are facing a physical inactivity crisis -only seven per cent of them meeting Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines of at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day - Sogo Active works to inspire youth to incorporate physical activity into their day-to-day lives.
The program provides micro grants to local community organizations (also known as community host organizations) that create or host youth-inspired physical activity events or challenges that get young people active. Sogo Active helps connect youth to these local community organizations where they are able to pursue physical activity challenges - from dancing and rock climbing to boxing and dodge ball.
The SCSC is happy to use this grant to help offset costs of a fall program, starting in mid-September. There are up to two grants of $250 available, and applications can be found on the bulletin boards at either arena, or by contacting the club at: [email protected] or checking the website at www.sunshinecoastskatingclub.ca.
CanSkate is the only nationally recognized learn-to-skate program in Canada and is run solely by the SCSC and their NCCP certified coaching staff. The CanSkate program prepares skaters for all other ice-based sports, teaching basic skills. It allows kids to move on into figure skating, ringette or hockey (CanPowerskate), speed skating or simply skating for recreation and health.
'"Our Sogo Active grant will certainly help us achieve our objective of promoting healthy options and allowing every child on the Coast the opportunity to learn to skate," Jarvis added. "We encourage all members of our community to visit sogoactive.com to register for the program, and create or join a challenge."
