The Sunshine Coast Golf and Country Club is busy preparing for a prestigious ladies' golf championship next week.

The 2004 B.C. Senior Ladies' Championship is set to tee off at the course in Roberts Creek on Monday morning at 8 a.m. Opening ceremonies start at 7:30 a.m. Action continues on Tuesday with the final round on Wednesday. Closing ceremonies and the trophy presentation should be around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

"This is the biggest tournament of the year for senior women's golf in the province," said SCGCC head professional Jim Pringle. "We'll see a lot of past champions in the field. Our own Donna Thompson, who is a member here, will be among the favourites. We're all pulling for Donna. It would be quite a story to have her win at home."

Each year the top four finishers at the event make up Team B.C., which then goes on to compete at the national team championships later this year. B.C. has won the last two national team championships.

"Every competitor wants to be part of Team B.C. for a shot at the three-peat," Pringle said. "B.C. is dominating senior ladies' golf and everyone wants to continue that trend."

A total of 96 golfers will compete next week with ladies coming to the Coast from around the province. Groups of three will tee off each day with the final group teeing off around 10:30 a.m.

Pringle said spectators are more than welcome to come watch the action.

"This is a huge event for our club and a huge event for the Sunshine Coast," Pringle said. "Helen Steeves, who is a member here and district chair for our zone, was instrumental in securing this championship. Our course is so well suited for this tournament. The length of the course is not that long, but it still has challenging slopes and greens. We haven't hosted anything of this calibre since the B.C. juniors in the late 90s. There's a great buzz around the course. Our members are excited to be part of this, and we're looking forward to a great three days of championship golf."
