The Sunshine Coast Youth Soccer Association (SCYSA) is set to begin the second half of the 2011/12 season.
"Even though there is a demographic concern as indicated by the Sunshine Coast Community Foundation relative to the younger population, the SCYSA remains very active with 11 rep and 66 house teams," said executive director Norm Blair.
"The SCYSA board of directors continues to look to the future with a focus on coaching, referees, funding and fields.
"Ken Campbell, an avid player for more than 30 years, lives and breathes the game. He is working on strategies to provide coach training that is relative to the program offered by the SCYSA."
Blair said Campbell has committed himself to gaining provincial and national certification that will allow the SCYSA to develop grass roots programs.
"This will provide economic benefit to our community as more player development initiatives can be offered by the SCYSA while meeting governing body criteria," Blair added.
"Laurie Miller is similarly focused on referees. Both of these areas depend on people stepping up to take on the responsibility to provide good leadership for our youth."
He said in the community of soccer on the Sunshine Coast the SCYSA is fortunate to have so many willing to give their time.
"The board wishes to thank all those who have participated to ensure our youth have the opportunity to play the game," Blair said.
Much of what is offered by the SCYSA depends on financial support from the province of British Columbia along with local support from sponsors like DWM Securities Ltd. and Tim Hortons.
The various local governments are also a factor as they collectively provide the places for the players of the SCYSA to play the game.
"The game of soccer, like most team sports, depends on players working together as a unit. In this sense, the SCYSA looks to our local governments to work together to generate strategies that will maximize the present assets," Blair added.
"Joint use agreements are one area that should be set in motion. As we enter a new year with newly elected officials, it is the hope of the SCYSA that more thinking and action along these lines will take place. In the meantime, if you are new to the Coast or have some experience with the game to share with our youth, you are invited to email the association at [email protected]."
