Sechelt Nation's youth soccer teams placed first in four different categories at the 41st annual Seabird Island Festival held at the end of May.
The U13 team went undefeated with shutouts all weekend thanks to great goaltending from Aaron Dixon who received an all-star along with female all-star Maryah Paul.
The U10 division went down with two teams. The Sechelt Slayers placed fourth with all-star awards handed to Kordell Johnson and Aiyanna August. It was a tough battle for the young team, although they scored enough points to get into the semifinals with the wild card and by knocking out some big teams.
The other U10 team, Sechelt Warriors, placed first out of the 12 teams. The final game ended tied 1-1. Justin Fodchuk scored in the first five-minute overtime. After a strong defensive effort and great goaltending by Seth Joe, Musqueam was unable to score in the second overtime session, giving Sechelt the win. All-stars went to Eleny Robson and Justin.
There was non-stop excitement as the parents and fans shifted from one field to the other as the U7 Bumble Bees played their final against Musqueam.
On smaller fields the crowd gathered and the cheers were even louder watching these young ones battle it out.
Lazarick Yelton, who played goal in the first half, came out from the net in the second half and scored the winning goal, giving Sechelt the 2-1 win. All-stars went to Jaden Fodchuk and Taliah Yelton.
In a new division at this year's tournament, the Sechelt U5 team came out playing hard. It was no holds bar, as these five and under players tore up the field running in packs to chase the ball down. Their fields were even smaller and having the half-sized nets with no goalies, the goals were just getting tucked away. One of Sechelt's experienced four-year-old players, Rocky Nordvie, tucked away at least 15 goals during the weekend. All-star went to the whole team for placing first in the tournament.
