Another year of ball wrapped up in grand fashion as Sechelt Minor Softball held its year-end tournament on the Father's Day weekend.
More than 20 teams with players ages five to 19 set out with the goal of finishing the year with strong performances and fun times.
In the bantam division, the final came down to a showdown between Marsh Landscape and league champion Flemming Sombrowski. Both teams played well in the final, but strong pitching from Sheryl Quinn and Darryl Julius and a steady defence were enough to ensure Marsh Landscape a 15-4 win. MVP awards went to Andrew Edgar for Flemming Sombrowski and Megan Trousdell for Marsh Landscape. Sechelt Plumbing took home third place honours.
A pitching duel dominated the peewee division final, as Therin Hemstalk and Brennan Mayers squared off. Hitters on both sides struggled to make good contact, and when they did, the defence was there to shut the door. After a good battle, the Inlet Raiders edged out Popeye's Storage to take first place, while in the consolation game, Paul's Paintin' Place finished strong with a win over GBS to take third place.
In the squirt division, Canadian Tire was able to string together some clutch performances to take first place in the tournament after finishing fourth in league play. Second place went to Claytons, while Stockwell Sand & Gravel finished third.
Coaches had both the challenge and opportunity to influence the development of athletes, and the quality of play over the tournament demonstrated what a great job these volunteers have done. In particular, squirt featured a lot of youth this year as many young athletes were moved up to play in the division, and coaches Alain Bergeron, Alun Woolliams, Tracy Lloyd, Sandy Palm, Laura Peters and Gary Polischuk did a commendable job developing their teams.
Sechelt Minor Softball would like to thank all the athletes, families, volunteers, sponsors and the supportive community for investing in minor sport. Our community is strengthened by the active fun, character, teamwork and commitment kids learn participating in sport. We look forward to seeing everyone on the field next spring.
