The installation of ice at the Sunshine Coast Arena in Sechelt has been delayed due to the short water supply on the Sunshine Coast.
“The decision to delay making ice at the Sunshine Coast Arena is to support conservation efforts and prolong our available water supply. The SCRD [Sunshine Coast Regional District] Drought Management Plan is at Stage 3 where water conditions are acute and our focus is on preserving water for human health, environmental flows, and fire protection,” said Ian Hall, general manager of planning and community development, responsible for SCRD’s recreation service.
The initial ice installation at the arena uses more than 40,000 litres of water. Roughly the same amount of water is required each week for ice cleaning.
“By delaying installation of ice, SCRD is acting in support of managing water supply by avoiding non-essential water use,” Hall said.
Hall said the SCRD is sensitive to the “impact of delaying recreational ice opportunities for youth and a well-loved pastime.”
He added, “Staff are working with arena users [dry floor and ice users] to adjust schedules.”
Ice is available at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.
As soon as water use restrictions are lifted, the ice will be installed, Hall said.
