The U14 Scorpions continue to struggle with the injury bug, forcing the coaches to be creative in trying out players in new positions.
At home at Kinnikinnick last weekend, the Scorpions defeated the Killarney Gladiators 4-1. Jordan Kammerle got the home side on the board, scoring on a breakaway for a 1-0 lead. That lead was short-lived, as the Scorpions took an on-field break and found themselves scrambling in their own zone. The Gladiators quickly scored a breakaway goal of their own, tying the game 1-1.
Not sensing any urgency, the Scorpions continued their snooze and watched as the Gladiators tested goalkeeper Bradley Huddlestone time and time again. The shocker that woke the Scorpions up was a shot that hit the inside of the crossbar, but miraculously stayed out, keeping the game tied 1-1.
In the second half, the Scorpions returned to the field with poise and determination. Defenders Liam Rankin, Keegan Inkster, Cole Cooney and Philip Fogarty put their side of the field into lockdown, keeping the Gladiators far away from their net. Jordan Kammerle scored the Scorpions' second goal by deking past the goaltender. Finn Rogers, Gabe Goerzen and Duncan Armstrong continually turned back the Gladiators' attempts to move through the midfield.
Evan Griffin hit the crossbar with a powerful strike, and Everett August had a handful of near misses before finally giving the Scorpions their third of the game. 'Eggs' Benny Luporini scored the fourth and final goal of the game in tight to the Gladiators net.
The Scorpions' next game is away against the South Burnaby Timbers.
U13 boys
The Thunderbirds enjoyed another impressive win last Saturday, shutting out Cliff Avenue United 3-0 in Burnaby.
Cliff Ave came out strong and had the Coast boys on their heels for the first 10 minutes. However, once the Thunderbirds settled down and found their form, they started to control the game.
Several good opportunities went to waste as balls bounced harmlessly through the Cliff Ave goal area with no one to greet them before the visitors got their first.
Angelo Pinsonnault collected the ball in midfield and charged past several defenders before he was eventually brought down hard in the box for a penalty. Cole Schutz stepped up and smashed it into the top corner to open the scoring.
As defenders Jake Richmond-Benner and Brandon Ree-Lagace continued to turn back any attempt at evening it up, Cole latched onto one of their clearances, settled the ball with one touch and poked it home for his second and a 2-0 score.
With striker Jaimie Mundy causing trouble for their defenders and Brady Bathgate raging up the wing, another was soon to come as Kai Hansen took a picture perfect through ball from Angelo and rushed in to finish it expertly, for a 3-0 final score and a 3-0 record to start the season.
