Scorpions trip up Burnaby

The U11 Scorpions may not be the league champions yet, but their convincing 5-2 victory over visiting Burnaby CAU last weekend went some way towards confirming their intentions.

The U11 Scorpions may not be the league champions yet, but their convincing 5-2 victory over visiting Burnaby CAU last weekend went some way towards confirming their intentions.

It was only after a goal from Burnaby early in the first half that the Scorpions really stepped up with their "A" game. Tremendously supported by an indefatigable defence and keeper Eden Klinger, Scorpion forwards and midfielders stayed true to their name and played a sizzling match. Two goals from Everett August, along with one each from Cole Schutz, Kai Moore and Quintin Towert, left no doubt that the Scorpions are a force to be reckoned with.

After battling hard last weekend on home pitch against the North Shore Adranaline, resulting in a 0-0 score, the Vipers played this weekend on the home turf of the Burnaby Blizzard.

It was an even match between the two clubs. Cheyenne Mawby made some great saves keeping the game scoreless at the half.

Both teams came out hard in the second half, with Burnaby breaking the ice with a hard shot from their forward, that keeper Stephanie Slingerland stopped, but couldn't quite keep her hands on, as it trickled across the box to find another striker to finish it off.

Vipers were relentless as the defence attacked offensively keeping the ball in the Blizzards' end. Vipers had a free kick just past half, taken by Zoey Shutz, sending it to the top of the Blizzards 18-yard box, deflecting of the Blizzards' player, to the feet of Samantha Iles-Highton(Sami), who took a shot over the goalie, bouncing into the back of the net, to tie it up at 1-1.

Inferno are off to a perfect 2-0 start after a 1-0 win last week in New Westminster and on Sunday, Sept. 20, entertained the crowd with a 2-1 win over Richmond. The key to both wins was team play. More than a few attacks began from the goalie or defence and worked through the midfield to end in a strike.

A "shut-down" defence prompted a remark from the Inferno goalie that the first game was "boring." But there were no apologies from her teammates however.

The team would like to congratulate newly-elected captain Sophie Garmulewicz, and assistant captain Sarah Huddlestone.

The Predators took on the ICSF Azzurri from Burnaby last Saturday. The Azzurri came out hard and had the Predators on their heels early, but could not find the net. The Predators took over and controlled the play. Andrew Strom had a number of good chances, James Newton narrowly missed on a header and Tyler Jennens had a breakaway but the Azzurri goalie was solid.

In the second half, the Predators dominated play. Jack Davies, Jacob Bland and Jake Gjerdalen started numerous attacks moving up from the backline. As the time wound down it appeared the game was heading for a tie. However, with less than two minutes left, Andy Blattler sent speedy Matthew Brenholen in on a break. Matthew's first shot hit the goal post, but the rebound came back to him for an easy goal and the Predator win.
