The U14 rep Scorpions played their last league game two weeks ago and finished the season in second place in the gold division.
With the league wrapped up, the Scorpions turned their attention to getting into the Coastal and Provincial cups. The first step was to try to defend their North Shore Gold Cup championship against the North Vancouver Surge last weekend.
Only five minutes in, the Scorpions' defenders got caught too far up the field, and a speedy Surge forward got away with the ball. The one mistake was all it took, and the Surge went up 1-0.
A rotation of Scorpions' defenders, including Bradley Huddlestone, Duncan Armstrong, Keegan Inkster, Evan Griffin, Cole Cooney, Quin Towert and Jordan Kammerle, played a tighter and more conservative defensive style for the rest of the game. Midfielders Ben Luporini, Finn Rogers, Gabe Goerzen and Justin Fodchuk lent their support to the defence, not allowing the Surge any more significant chances in the first half of the game.
Late in the first half, Everett August took a corner and sent the ball back to Jordan Kammerle. Jordan volleyed the ball into the back of the Surge net, for his 50th strike of this season, tying the game 1-1
Goalkeeper Tristan Tidder was put to the test in the second half, when injuries and lack of substitutes took their toll.
The Scorpions spent much of the second half defending and could hardly muster up the energy when they had a chance to attack. At the end of regulation time, the game was deadlocked at 1-1. Being a Provincial Cup playdown, teams proceeded to pick five players for the shootout, with the Surge winning 4-3.
The Scorpions will still participate in the first round of the Coastal Cup and provincial playdowns, as a wild card team, on April 6.
House league
It was a beautiful day for soccer at Langdale field last Saturday as Navy and Orange took to the pitch for their last game of the regular season in U12 house league action.
Orange opened the scoring with a strike from Kordell Johnson that blasted through the goalie.
Matthew Browton then equalized with a nice run off passes from Kurt Hoog-endoorn and Gabriel Ryan.
It was Matthew again potting the go-ahead goal early in the second half with support from Brett Kopeck.
Orange responded with a conversion off the post by Harrison Watson and then another strike by Brody Pluess.
Navy pressed late in the game for the equalizer, but Brody's marker proved to be the game winner as time expired.
