The Sunshine Coast Scorpions U15 rep boys opened their new season with a 2-0 win over the Vancouver Predators last weekend at Kinnikinnick Park.
Rookies Jordan Dunk and Neil Sorensen played on the wings, supporting their new teammates attacking and defending. There were many near misses by the Scorpions, including chances by Jordan Kammerle, Everett August, Bradley Huddlestone, Justin Fodchuk, Duncan Armstrong, Quintin Towert, Finn Rogers and Ben Luporini.
The Scorpions defenders Cole Cooney, Evan Griffin, Philip Fogarty, Keegan Inkster and Liam Rankin were solid in front of rookie goalie Keeran Peel.
Liam scored the first goal after powering through the opposition's entire midfield and shooting, and Jordan drew and converted a penalty shot.
U14 boys
The U14 Thunderbirds are off to a flying start after a 5-1 win over the Vancouver Rangers last weekend.
Vancouver scored first, but the Thunderbirds stormed back and equalized within minutes on a shot from the top of the box by Sean Pletz.
As halftime grew imminent, the Thunderbirds increased their urgency. Tenacious defending by Angelo Pinsonnault and slick passing byKai Hansensaw Wyatt Baldwin get released towards the goal, holding off two defenders until he could slot home for the lead with the last play of the half.
The second half was only a minute in when Cole Schutz showed his pleasure in being out of the keeper's gloves and smashed one top corner from outside the area, for a 3-1 cushion.
Not letting up, the Thunderbirds asserted themselves on the match and controlled most of the play with strong work in the centre of the park by Elliot Wadge and Will Magnusson who hit a long range beauty with his weaker left foot.
With more stellar defence by Casey Bains, Brendin Moscrip and Eden Klinger, chances were few for the home side.
When the visitor's net was threatened, keeper Isaac Oka was unbeatable grabbing everything including one especially brave rushing tackle and a death stare that led to a miss on a penalty kick for handball. The game was put to rest with a second for Wyatt on a deflected shot.
House League
A full weekend of action took place up and down the Coast in Sunshine Coast Youth Soccer Association House League play.
In the U15 division, a great game was played between the Navy Seals and Team Teal with the Seals winning 6-0.
In the U7 co-ed division, Team Red bested Team Black 6-2.
