The Scorpions U13 boys' rep team opened the season with a decisive 5-2 win over the Italian Canadian Sports Federation Azzurri, in East Vancouver on Saturday.
Duncan Armstrong led the scoring and tallied a hat trick before the game was over. Defenders Tristan Tidder and Keegan Inkster played the entire game in the oppressive heat, keeping the ICSF attack mostly to the outside. Evan Griffin, Gabe Goerzen and Phillip Fogarty fought for the ball and fed the midfielders and forwards with their passes. Cool and calm play by goalkeeper Xavier Benoit-Benjamin bought the Scorpions time to mount their repeated attacks.
Midfielders Bradley Huddlestone, Everett August, Ben Luporini and Finn Rogers expended a ton of energy, shifting from offensive attack to defensive support. Justin Fodchuk drew a penalty and converted on his shot for the fourth Scorpions goal of the game. Jordan Kammerle hammered in a pass from Quin Towert, for the fifth and final goal of the game.
Spartans U16
The Spartans U16 boys' rep soccer team kicked off their season with a thoroughly convincing 4-1 victory over the highly ranked visiting West Vancouver Spuraways. The Spartans' deft offensive play in the first half left the Spuraways with few scoring opportunities.
Spartans' first goal came from Jordan Hoy's wickedly powerful blast from outside the 18-yard line. Spartans' second goal resulted from a penalty kick. Winger Raven-Bear DiPietro dropped down the wing and, in the process of crossing in front of the Spuraways keeper, a collision occurred resulting in the penalty. Ryan Judd took the kick and scored for the Spartans.
The Spartans maintained their powerful momentum with a third goal, another from Jordan coming off a cross from forward Felix Rankin. His keen eye spotted Jordan, whose one timer proved too much for the Spuraways' keeper to stop.
The Spuraways finally responded with a goal of their own that only aroused the ire of the Spartan squad. Spartan forward Josh Diamond bided his time and delivered a blistering shot into the upper corner of the net off a cross from Coulfon Windsor.
