Three weeks into the season the U13 Scorpions found themselves tied at the top of the league standings, with the South Burnaby Strikers. As luck would have it, the Strikers came Sechelt on Oct. 1 for a match with the Scorpions.
Last Saturday the Scorpions survived a missed penalty shot early in the match, when a Burnaby striker hit the right post. This near miss sent the Scorpions midfielders on the attack.
Gabe Goerzen opened the scoring off a nice pass from Duncan Armstrong. Midfielders Everett August, Ben Luporini, Liam Rankin and Bradley Huddlestone provided the backbone for their teams' offensive attack, and defensive cover.
Jordan Kammerle converted on a free kick after getting manhandled by the Burnaby defence. Jordan almost scored again on another free kick, however the keeper stopped the initial shot, as well as the rebound shot by Finn Rogers.
In a scramble, Quin Towert popped in the loose ball behind the sprawling goalie.
Jordan scored the fourth and final Scorpions goal on an amazing tight angle shot that was placed in the top right corner.
The tight, strong defence provided by Tristan Tidder, Keegan Inkster, Phillip Fogarty, Cole Cooney and Evan Griffin frustrated the offensively potent Strikers who managed very few shots on net. The shots Burnaby did get off were easily handled by keeper Xavier Benjamin, who recorded his second shutout in as many weeks.

The Thunderbirds remained unbeaten after roaring back against the Riley Park Rebels last Saturday in Vancouver.
Playing his first game of the season, Casey Baines was welcomed back enthusiastically by his old teammates and returned the joy by hitting the net for two great goals. The first came when Elliot Wadge won the ball at the edge of the box, fought off two defenders and played the ball back to the onrushing Casey to smash over the keeper. The Rebels responded with two goals to take a 2-1 lead into the break.
The Thunderbirds came out for the second half with renewed energy and took control of the game.
With Brandon Ree-Lagace anchoring the defence and Will Magnussen bossing the midfield, the visitors tied it up with a goal from Coulter Prestage.
The T-Birds went ahead when Daniel Bobocel out raced a Rebel defender to a through ball from Sean Pletz and stretched to hit it home. But Casey iced it when he bagged his second to seal the 4-2 victory.
