You may have noticed the new Sunshine Coast Cycling Club's team colours and logo on our club members as they ride the roads and trails of the Coast. The bright yellow, blue and green are easy to see. SCC members are proud of the new design and would like to thank all the sponsors who helped with the cost of the club activities this year.
SCC's race team wrapped up the season recently with some pretty impressive results.
At the provincial championships in Mount Washington, every member of the race team earned a spot on the podium with Christine Lynch (senior women), Katherine Short (elite women) and Harrison Duxbury-Sleep (junior expert men) all taking the provincial title in the downhill with Matthew Clough securing the 12th place spot. Forrest Riesco, also from Gibsons, took third place on the podium.
Harrison's win at the BC Cup finals in Hemlock Valley earned him the overall BC Cup points trophy along with Short who recently took on the best downhillers in the world at the DH World Championships in Switzerland. Matthew Clough finished strong at Hemlock in 10th position.
On the cross-country side, Louis Dillon (junior expert) took the win and the provincial championship spot, tying for top spot in points in the BC Cup series.
Eric Dillon (U17 men) and Denys Jones (master men 50-plus) both took the bronze medal with Liam Hafey (U15 men) finishing eighth and Jonas Lomax (three-lap citizen men) taking sixth place. Liam and Eric both finished second in BC Cup points.
The race team is just one of the many opportunities offered by SCC.
The club supports every area of cycling including recreational riding on the road and on the trails, trail building, youth education, road safety, advocacy with local, provincial and federal governments and more.
This coming year, along with support from a Sunshine Coast Regional District grant, the SCC will donate $1,750 towards Lifecycles "Bikewise" interactive training. Several elementary schools will have the opportunity to have this bike safety-training program for their students. Cedar Grove, Madeira Park and Langdale schools all had the program this past year. SCC donates finances and the members donate their time to keeping the trails open and in great condition for cyclists and hikers alike.
The fall riding season is in the planning stages and SCC is looking at a series of fun, family-oriented Toonie races suitable for cyclists of all abilities. As the weather gets wet, our cyclists continue to ride, and the Toonie race series becomes the "Soggy Bottom" series.
In the spring, SCC will be forming a learn-to-race team, specifically for the young cyclist who might be interested in learning to race.
