Sunshine Coast hockey mom Brenda Rowe has been named a finalist in the Kraft Hockey Goes On Contest.

This contest is a $1 million initiative of Kraft that recognizes individuals who help make Hockey Go On in their community. Volunteers, coaches and players were nominated throughout January and February, with a total of 1,045 nominations across Canada. The nomination included an essay regarding the nominee and how he/she helps Hockey Go On in their community. A panel of judges then reviewed all the nominations and chose the 100 finalists -20 in each of the five regions across Canada. Finalists were announced last week on their website.

Rowe has volunteered for the Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey (SCMHA) for more than 10 years. She is passionate about hockey and the huge benefits it has for our children, and this is seen in everything she does. She is a strong and dedicated leader who seems to make big things happen with few resources and spends countless hours giving of her own time planning fundraising events, awards dinners, and even organizing concussion baseline testing for the safety of our players.

She seeks out opportunities for players including hosting tournaments, NHL alumni games, youth exchanges across Canada and team building days at a local YMCA.

She believes in teaching children to give back to their own community, organizing volunteer opportunities for minor hockey players to participate in Christmas hamper programs, blanket drives for the homeless, clothing and food drives and much more. She has made many sacrifices on a personal level to serve as board member, fundraising organizer and hockey mom.

Voting will take place starting at 6 a.m. this Saturday, March 23, and will continue until midnight on March 24. The finalist with the most votes will win $100,000 for their minor hockey association. The next four top vote getters will receive $20,000 each for their association.
