BC Hockey, in partnership with Respect Group Inc., announced June 16 that the Respect in Sport (RIS) parent program will now be offered to all parents who wish to become certified through the on-line interactive resource.
As with the coach/leader RIS program, the parent program's goal is to educate, empower and create a culture of respect. It is an on-line training program available on the BC Hockey website focused on helping parents become better sport parents by providing information on parents' natural influence over their children and the role they play in their children's enjoyment of sports and activities. The program also provides parents with tools to evaluate their own behaviour.
The one-hour certification program is intended to encourage positive sport behaviours and to enhance communication between parents, coaches and officials. Unacceptable parent behaviour is most often cited as the top reason coaches, managers and officials leave a sport, highlighting the need for a sport-specific program designed to help parents set realistic expectations and to ensure their children have fun and learn the value of sport participation.
The optional course is $12 plus all applicable taxes per person. Once the course has been completed, the certification does not expire.
Respect in Sport is Canada's only on-line bullying, abuse, harassment and neglect prevention program. It was founded in 2004 by Wayne McNeil and former NHL player Sheldon Kennedy. It was developed in consultation with the Canadian Red Cross to protect youth, inform leaders and mitigate an organization's liability.
