Charity hockey challenge

The sixth annual Marylou Lymer Memorial Charity Hockey tournament was held last Saturday, March 30, at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.

Four co-ed teams took part in the event sponsored by the Sunshine Coast Credit Union, Gramma's Pub, Blackfish Pub and Gibsons Recycling. As of this week, the fundraising goal of $20,000 was almost met.

Lymer, a mother and grandmother, courageously battled breast cancer for seven years, passing away on April 1, 2010.

In 2009, she helped establish an annual hockey tournament in her hometown of Gibsons to raise funds to assist charities dedicated to the fight against cancer. Her dream was to see other communities utilize friends, family and hockey as a basis for fundraising dedicated to fighting cancer. This event is to honour her courage and to assist others win their battle with cancer.

Participating hockey players are committing to raise a minimum of $300 in sponsor pledges to participate. All net proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society, with $5,000 being donated to the Sunshine Coast Hospice Society.
