The final regular season games are in the books for Sunshine Coast Rapids lacrosse with some teams getting ready for a run at provincial titles.
The novice team wrapped up its season at the Golden Spike tournament in Port Moody. The kids had a fun and exciting time, playing four games. These were the first lacrosse games for most of the novice team and they gained a lot of experience and improved with each game. Special thanks to coaches Mike Molina and Keith Shannon for their dedication this year.
The pee wee team played a doubleheader in Gibsons on Saturday.
Rapids lost 4-3 to Vancouver in double overtime with a pair of goals by Chris Risebrough and a single by Braedon Service.
In game two, Vancouver again pulled out a tight 5-4 win - this time in triple overtime.
Rapids goals were scored by Elann Billbach, Jake Podgorenko, Chris and Braedon.
The Rapids travel to Mission this Saturday to play a best-of-three series to see who will clinch a spot in the provincials.
This Friday (June 28) the team is hosting a fundraising car wash and barbecue at the Gibsons IGA from 3 to 9 p.m.
The bantam Rapids ended their season last Saturday with an 8-7 win over Abbotsford.
The midget Rapids played two games last weekend and continued to demonstrate growth and improvement.
Facing Mission in an away game on Saturday, Connar Peers led the scoring early in the first period. Mission answered, and then scored the only goal in the second period.
Starting the third with a one-goal deficit, Graydon Inksater made his shot count, followed shortly thereafter by one from Jacob Huson.
Mission equalized and then scored the winning goal halfway through the period, with the Rapids unable to capitalize on the final power play.
In Sunday's home game, the Rapids blitzed visiting Port Coquitlam 9-0 with goalie Goran Trokicic's earning his first shutout. Graydon and Connar both doubled their efforts for the weekend with a goal each, Raven Wall and Gabriel Chamberlain each added two, and Justin Macey, Ryan Fraser and Wesley Konopasek all had singles. Many of the goals were unassisted, but assists were credited to Gabriel, Raven and Max McDicken.
The outcome wouldn't have been possible without the defensive strength provided by Cam Wray, Matt Risebrough, Kalen Sheel-Alain, Scout Jagdeo and Cody Broski.
The team is gaining momentum with three regular season games left as they head into the provincial play downs.
Next up is North Shore this Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Gibsons and Area Community Centre.
