Racing season begins for SOAR

Race season has begun for SOAR, the Sunshine Coast's outrigger canoe racing club.

Race season has begun for SOAR, the Sunshine Coast's outrigger canoe racing club. On Saturday, May 25, a SOAR crew joined paddlers from around the Lower Mainland, Washington and California at the 2013 Jericho Iron Classic, and raced a 16 km course along the edge of Spanish Banks under grey skies.

While SOAR placed just behind the middle of the pack, the crew paddled hard throughout, even after losing an early advantage when they were rammed from behind in the first km of the race. Half of this year's Jericho crew are in their first or second year of outrigger canoeing and were working hard to apply the skills they have developed in training. Everyone aboard put their utmost into the race and felt well satisfied with their performance.

SOAR warmly welcomes new members. Anyone interested in learning the sport of outrigger canoeing can contact the club at [email protected] for more information, or check out the club website, with Facebook and Twitter links, at www.soarpaddleclub.com.
