The all-star baseball season is in full swing in Gibsons.

All three teams this year began play earlier this month and have already shown the form that sent a number of teams to the provincials last year.

The Bantam squad is off to a solid start with a 7-1 record. This group, made up of 13- and 14-year-olds from Gibsons to Halfmoon Bay is one of 16 teams from Greater Vancouver trying to make the top seven qualifiers for the provincial tournament to be held in Victoria Aug. 4 to 7. There are also zones for Vancouver Island and the Southern Interior that will participate in the provincials.

The summer league is a challenging one for Gibsons, as they have to play four games every weekend to finish the 14-game schedule each team must complete throughout July.

The squad has met the challenge thus far with only one loss.

Out of the remaining six games, four will be played at Ryan Dempster field at Brothers Park in Gibsons over the next two weeks. Game times are 12 and 3 p.m. July 25 and Aug. 1 respectively.

The Midget squad has played four games and sits at .500 with a record of 2-2.

This weekend will be a major test for the squad as they have four games scheduled. They play Surrey/Delta today (Saturday) with two games at Brothers Park then hit the road Sunday for two games in Ridge Meadows against Rutland and West Side from the Okanagan.

"After these four games we'll have a pretty good idea where we stand," said coach John Moran. "It's good to be at .500, but .500 probably won't get you into the provincials. This weekend is a big test. "Hopefully the team will be up to the challenge."

Following this weekend's action, the squad has a home double-header against Tsawassen on July 31, and then hits the road for a par on Aug. 1 against Newton.

The Mosquito squad is off to a bit of a slow start with a record of 1-4 so far.

Coach Bill Campbell said the team is not as strong as the squad who went to the provincials last year.

"Two of the players moved up to peewee and three of our stronger players chose not to play this year," Campbell said. "We're not as strong and I don't think we're on pace for the provincials, but the kids are playing hard and having fun."
