George Richey and Dal Ghag competed in the 2009 B.C. Fall Classic powerlifting championships on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Roundhouse Community Arts and Rec Centre.
Ghag set six provincial records and won two gold medals in the 90-kg junior category while Richey set two personal best lifts in the squat and dead lift and won a gold medal in the category for Masters ll 100-kg. The lifters train at Cross Trainers Fitness Centre in Gibsons.
Martial arts
The Western Canadian Martial Arts Championships were held at the campus of BCIT in Burnaby on Oct. 24.
Four fighters from Ostovic's Gym competed in submission grappling. Kris Conroy entered the novice 15 to 17-year-old division and was eliminated in his first match due to points. Richard Brotherston won the silver medal in the novice heavyweight division. Rob Michael was tapped out in his first match in the novice 155-pound division while Matt Cotton won gold in the intermediate light heavyweight division this result coming after he picked up a gold medal as a novice in the June WCMAC event.

University soccer
The Victoria Vikes men's soccer team punched its ticket to the Canada West championship with a 2-0 road win last weekend in Calgary.
The Vikes, who feature Roberts Creek's Will Gye, will face the Trinity Western Spartans in one Canada West semifinal today (Friday) at the Point Grey campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC). UBC takes on the Alberta Golden Bears in the other semi. The Spartans have already clinched a berth in the CIS national tournament Nov. 12 to 15 in Langley since they are the host team, so if they advance to the Canada West final on Saturday, the second place team would also qualify for the nationals. The Vikes finished the regular season with a record of 8-5-1. Gye has one assist in 12 games.
