The Sunshine Coast Women's Hockey League got a boost for their upcoming season with a week-long skills camp as part of the Sunshine Coast Hockey School.
Last week 25 female players took to the ice at Gibsons and Area Community Centre for evening training sessions with head instructor David Arduin.
Arduin said it was a good week with lots of enthusiasm and fun on the ice.
"They've been awesome and are very willing to learn and listen," Arduin said. "The kids wants to learn and have fun in their own way, but these women, you tell them something to do, they soak it in. It's been hard with only a short ice period. I've come in with a list of about 10 things for them to do every session, and I can only get to three or four of them. They're all very enthusiastic and are picking up the skills very well, asking questions. In general, it's just been a great experience."
As this was the first time a women's session was held as part of the hockey school, Arduin said he had no idea what to expect.
"I didn't envision anything, to be honest. I didn't know what to expect or what type of players we would have," he said. "I was really eager to see where women's hockey is at on the Coast. The interest is there, and I've seen improvement from every player."
Arduin said players with all skill abilities took part, which made things harder technically, but just the same, he saw a lot of value in teaching the players even the basic skills.
"I've talked to them and they can see it visually, but there is so much to work on," he said. "They just have to challenge themselves, push themselves and try new things. I've encouraged them to fall - if you fall, you're trying, you're doing better. It's just getting them out of their comfort zone, trying new things and realizing what they can do.
"It's different working with adults, but it's been a great experience, and I can't wait for next year. Hopefully, we'll have more girls out, more ice slots, and we can do more things. So it's been great."
The women's league has started registration for the new season. Women aged 13 and up with all skill levels are encouraged to come. Games will be played on Monday and Friday nights. Registration forms are available at Side Dish Café in Sechelt or by calling Margaret at 604-885-9692.
