The Rain'er Shine Pirates had other teams walking the plank last week, picking up three wins to take over top spot in the Sunshine Coast Men's Fastball League.
On Monday night, July 16, the Pirates beat the Relics 18-8.
Josh Gray got the win, pitching a complete game, and Kelly Hamblin hit his second home run of the year. Randy Younghusband got the nod for the Relics and pitched a well-rounded game. He also ripped a bases-clearing triple.
On Wednesday the Pirates beat Custom Carpet 10-0.
Jim Peers and Terry Williams split the game on the rubber, getting the win and shutout. Cale Fraser had a strong night at the plate, notching four RBIs including a two-run home run. Custom's Aaron Hately caught three runners stealing in the loss.
On Friday, July 20, the Pirates edged Lon's Gun Show 8-7.
The battle for first place started off as a pitchers' duel between Peers and Mike Sopow, but in the fourth inning, the Gun Show offence came alive with Lonnie Allen, Eoin Ross and Mike Husband all laying down perfect bunts to load the bases for Jordan Peever who cleared the sacks with a triple.
Ken Fujimori also added a home run to give the Gun Show a 7-3 lead.
But the Pirates battled back thanks to big hits from Cory Kaboche, James Pomfret, Josh Gray-Perl and a strong three for four night from Fraser, who also knocked in the winning run.
In other action, the RJS Blue Jays had a 2-1 week beating the Lighthouse/Wilson Creek IGA Brewers on July 18 and the Relics on July 21.
Tyler Starnes pitched well for the Blue Jays on Wednesday in a close game. Ryan Stevens turned two inning-ending double plays for RJS.
In the win over the Relics, Dave Moran pitched a strong four innings.
The Blue Jays loss came at the hands of the Gun Show 13-12 on Monday night.
Lighthouse picked up a 10-9 win over Custom on Friday night.
Bill Stockwell and Matt Fawkus locked up in the pitching match-up. The big blow was a bases-clearing triple by Andrew Marsh.
