The Gibsons Pigs got back into the win column with an impressive 37-0 thrashing of the Simon Fraser University (SFU) Clan in third division rugby action at Elphinstone Secondary School, Feb. 28.

The Pigs, who were coming off an 11-10 defeat to Kamloops two weeks ago, scored early and often in the rout.

Chris Lumsden scored the Pigs' first try about eight minutes in. Lumsden caught SFU off guard after a quick break in the action and powered five yards past three stunned SFU defenders for the score.

Albert Bezaire put Gibsons up 10-0 with his first of two tries of the day. Bezaire also kicked the conversion to put the Pigs ahead 12-0.

About 15 minutes before half, Jim Peers rumbled in for the Pigs' third try.

The conversion kick failed, and the Pigs led 17-0 by half time.

Gibsons not only dominated on the scoreboard in the first half, they also dominated ball control. It took almost 30 minutes for SFU to get over half and into Gibsons territory.

This was a fact that Peers made a point of mentioning to the team during the half time break.

"We said at the start of the game we have to fight for every loose ball, and we're doing that," Peers said to the team. "We're playing well, and we have to keep playing hard for another half."

The Pigs kept up the pressure in the second half, scoring 20 more points.

Bezaire scored the next try early into the second half as the Pigs took the kick-off and promptly marched down the field.

Steve Peel scored two brilliant tries, one on an impressive 30-yard run later in the half to put the Pigs up 32-0.

Peers scored his second try of the day in between the Peel scores and the Pigs wrapped up a solid win.

Gibsons sits with a record of 9-3 and is tied for third place in the Vancouver Rugby Union's Third Division with the University of British Columbia.

The Pigs return to action today (March 6) with a home game at Elphi starting at 11:30 a.m. against the Rowers.
