The rugby tradition on the Sunshine Coast continues as the Eagles, Warriors, Pigs and Scribes all came together in a junior and senior festival of rugby at Shirley Macey Field on Saturday, May 29.
The Gibsons Pigs senior men's team sponsored the event and invited their rivals the Vancouver Scribes to come over with their junior squad from Windermere Secondary School for a double header of action. The Pigs junior mates, the Chatelech Eagles started things off with a game against the Warriors. Billed as the Coastal Clash, this is an annual battle now in its ninth year between the two schools.
This year Chat retained the trophy with a 12-0 victory.
A slick ball on a wet day made for some unpredictable play, but in the end, superior play calling by Rhys Amber, ferocious tackling by Dominic Acciaroli, and breakaway running by Doug Cuthbertson combined with a solid scrum effort to dominate the Warriors.
After the game, the Pigs waged their tilt with the Scribes, avenging the earlier loss and providing a exhibition of experienced rugby for the on-looking juniors. The Pigs, in the tradition of rugby hosting, fed the crowd with a delicious roasted pig on the spit. Pork sandwiches never tasted so good! In the end, another great day of Coast rugby was had by all with more to come in the summer.
