Gibsons Brandy Perry, who now calls North Vancouver home, is off to the Canada Summer Games this week to compete in the wrestling competition.
Brandy and 10 other girls from across B.C. make up the girls wrestling team, which will compete in Sherbrook, Que.
She has been working towards this since the end of February at which time she qualified for the high school national championships that were held in Saskatchewan in early April. It was a good tournament and Brandy placed in the top eight for her weight class. This has all been in preparation for the Team BC tryouts, which she qualified for in early June.
Since the nationals in April, Brandy has been training twice a week with the Simon Fraser University wrestling team. Her training for the Summer Games has consisted of two very intense camps, the first in California at the beginning of July for seven days, and then it was off to Idaho for another four-day camp.
Since returning from the camps in mid-July, Brandy has kept up her rigorous schedule, going to SFU three times per week to train.
More than 800 hours of webcasting coverage will be made available during the games through the Canada Games portal, canadagames.tv.
The Team BC wrestlers will be the first group of athletes entering the building as they will be carrying the flag for British Columbia.
Dempster picks up a win
After four previous starts with no decisions, Gibsons Ryan Dempster finally got back into the win column Saturday night as the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles 7-3.
Dempster gave up two runs in 5-1/3 innings to earn his first win in five starts since June 30. He allowed six hits, with two walks and four strikeouts, improving his record to 6-8.
In his previous start, Dempster was in line for a win against the New York Yankees, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead and he was left with a no decision. Boston won the game in extra innings.
