The Kevin Penonzek rink from the Royal City Curling Club used a little previous home ice advantage to capture the A-event final at the men's bonspiel at the Gibsons Curling Club last weekend.
Penonzek, with third Barry Meyer, second Cam Johnston and lead Rodney Hickman, know the ice in Gibsons well as the foursome were previous local club members.
The team beat out familiar foes the Wright team from the Royal City Club 7-1 in the final, ending the game after six ends with a big steal of three.
In the B-event final, club manager and ice technician Jared Wannamaker skipped his team of Bryan Fitchell, Ken Johnson and Howie Larsen to the win over the Jarvis rink from the Hollyburn Country Club by a score of 9-3, highlighted by a steal of three in the sixth end.
The C-final was an all Gibsons affair with the Colin Gatzke rink of Bill Liddecoat, Glen Dempster and Trevor Metz beating the Darren Kopeck foursome of Ross Harry, Pete Metcalfe and Rich Redfern.
A total of 20 teams took part in the three-day event (11 from the Lower Mainland and nine from the Sunshine Coast) which started on Friday, Jan. 13.
Up next for the club is the annual mixed bonspiel set for Feb. 3 to 5.
