April Fool's Run
Sechelt mom Mary Kenny is doing her first half marathon at the 2011 April Fool's Run in memory of her son, Thomas Bennett, to mark the first anniversary of his death, April 1, 2010 atop Mt. Shasta.
Bennett, a chemical engineer who graduated from the University of British Columbia in May 2007, and who spent considerable time visiting family and friends and working summers on the Coast, was 26 when the tragedy occurred.
"I can think of no better way to honour my son's memory than to acknowledge his first anniversary with my first half marathon," said Kenny. "It was he who got me running a few years back with his infectious grin and enthusiastic challenge to 'live life to the fullest'. He would be proud."
To pass on life from Bennett's tragic death, Kenny has established an award fund in his memory at UBC. But they need help. During 2011, they hope to fundraise $30,000 for the fund, so it can be endowed and then offered annually, in perpetuity, in Bennett's name.
