Peewee Crusherz off to provincials

The Peewee Crusherz, sponsored bySC Credit Union and Metzner Orthodontics,are off to the provincials July 8 to 10 in Cranbrook after a pair of successful weekends of play.

Gibsons brought home gold after a first-place finish in North Delta June 4 and 5, winning three of their four games in the round robin, only losing 5-4 to the Newton Blazers.

Advancing to the semifinalsagainst Port Coquitlam, Gibsons sent them packing with a mercy under their belt. Leah Ewert pitched a shutout.

Advancing to the finals against the Blazers again, the Crusherz rallied around their pitcher, and Newton had trouble contacting the pitches being delivered from Leah. The game-ending play was atriple by Carly Gillard with the bases loaded, bringingin thefinal runs and giving Gibsons a10-run lead and ending the game.

Other highlights included timely hits from Leah, Stephanie Kirkham and Veronica Evans, awesome catches by Carly and Stephanie, a snarly play by catcher Stephanie Slingerland as she deked out a third base runner and tagged her out between home and third, and Cheyenne Mawby had to lay it all out to tag out a second base runner trying to steal more thanshe should.

In the District playdowns last weekend, Gibsons squared off against the North Vancouver Lightening, winning both games.

Leah pitched both games, allowing only one run, while the Gibsons bats helped mercy both games.

Good hits came from Krystal Williams, HannahJung,Hannah Smith, who was coming off an injury, Leah, Alyssa Black and Charli Johnston.
