Pacific Blades start new season

Pacific Blades Speed Skating Club is alive and kicking, and in spite of the economic downturn and reduced grants to sport organizations, it has the highest membership ever.

Pacific Blades Speed Skating Club is alive and kicking, and in spite of the economic downturn and reduced grants to sport organizations, it has the highest membership ever. This may be partially due to a successful speed skating meet in Gibsons last February and because of the upcoming Olympics, where speed skating is the most successful and exciting sport for Canada.

Willie Daigneault, the club's most experienced skater, participated a week ago at the Mission Sprint Meet. In his midget age group, he finished fifth overall out of 20 skaters. He also established many personal best times, putting him in a great position to qualify and represent British Columbia at the Canadian Speed Skating Championship, which will be held in March 2010 in New Brunswick.

Coast resident Nicole Maseja, a member of the British Columbia Team, skating for Ridge Meadows Racers Club, participated at the Mission meet, as well as at the most prestigious three-day meet, Octoberfest in Calgary. This meet has very good international participation, and Nicole skated well, improving her times and the overall standings, compared to last last year's Octoberfest competition. She is also preparing for the nationals next March in Cambellton, NB.

The club would like to invite everyone to try speed skating. They offer a tryout package for $25 for three sessions in Gibsons' new arena; skates are supplied. Please call to register at 604-885-9077.
