Speed skaters from the local Pacific Blades have placed well at regional and provincial meets the past few weeks.
On March 7, Willie Daigneault and Nicole Maseja competed at the B.C. short track championships in Kamloops.
Willie finished seventh overall in the province in his first year in the midget division.
Nicole, representing Ridge Meadow Racing Club this season, finished fourth overall in the intermediate division, winning an iron medal. It was her best finish ever at the provincials. Nicole was also selected to the provincial team that will represent the province at the Canadian short track national championship in Cambridge, Ont. this weekend. The event will be a first for Nicole and she is the first speed skater from the Sunshine Coast to skate at a national championship.
Three skaters participated two weekends ago at the Southern Regional B.C. Championship in Abbotsford.
Justin Fodchuck in his bantam division won gold, winning six out seven races and establishing a personal best time in all distances.
Jaden Fodchuck was entered in the youngest division, the under six-years-old cradle division, racing for just his second time since he started skating. He finished fourth, just missing out on a medal.
Ondra Maseja was entered in the juvenile boys division, and he finished 12th out of 21 racers. He also improved all his personal best times over all his distances.
