Last week’s announcement that a local group is seeking support for a junior hockey franchise on the Sunshine Coast was met with tremendous enthusiasm over the weekend. In a mere eight hours, more than 1,300 signatures were gathered at the “Junior” hot dog give away hosted by Gibsons Building Supply and Gibsons IGA.

“It was such a great weekend and what a strong show of support. We were delighted with the turn out,” said spokesperson Brenda Rowe. “This just gives us the motivation needed for our community to get behind our push for a Pacific Junior Hockey League (PJHL) franchise.”

Brenda added, “Now the real work begins. We have created a non-profit, the Sunshine Coast Junior Hockey Society has been formed and will be the driver to bring a team here to the Coast. To that end, we have hired Rick Hopper to spearhead our efforts and provide us with his expertise and experience in a junior hockey start up. Rick was instrumental in bringing the Powell River Kings to the upper Coast and he will be working closely with the PJHL to provide them with everything they will require to consider our application.”
