Open event a huge success

The Suncoast Racquet Club proudly hosted its first open to the public tennis tournament Feb. 5 to 7.

This first-class, member-owned and funded indoor tennis facility, which currently has 120 members, offers tennis lessons, youth and adult programs, tournaments and some public drop-ins, and still has room for more members. Those who have not yet seen the facility are encouraged to come by for a visit or check out www.SRCtennis.ca.

The tournament was a huge success with nine non-members and 26 members participating in four events: men's and women's singles and doubles.

There were so many entries and long exciting matches that time delays were inevitable and the tournament organizers found it challenging to fit all the games into the three-day event. It was wonderful to see a whole family out enjoying the tennis, as long-time members Gail and Darryl Lewis and their son Keith and daughter Michelle supported this first-time event.

Members were also proud to watch their own B.C. junior champion, Madison Shoemaker, playing with an up and coming new player, Beverly Chew, and winning the women's doubles division, defeating Tammy Klashinsky and Laurie Reid in the final.

In women's singles, Klashinsky defeated Pam Service, while Carolyn Spence was the women's single consolation win.

Darcy Lawrence and club coach Jacques Joyal teamed up to defeat Yev Shvartsman and Friedl Bruderman in men's doubles, while the men's singles final between Dave Jonas and Joyal has yet to be played.

The men's singles consolation was won by John Nygren, who defeated Don Ludwar, and the men's doubles consolation was won by the team of Don Ludwar and Federico Mendez, who defeated Keith and Darryl Lewis.
