Olympian Larkyn Austman skated at the Gibsons arena on Saturday, March 10 as part of Sunshine Coast Skating Club Performance Night. She gave audiences two routines. The first was a short program to Mein Herr, and the second was a gala performance to a Great Gatsby song compilation.

“It’s so fun to come and skate here. The kids at this club are not motivated by success, they’re here to just have fun,” said Austman after her second performance.

The 20-year-old Coquitlam skater competed in Pyeongchang, but did not make it to the medal round. She is connected to the Coast through local figuring skating coach Daryl Austman, who is her second cousin.

“The Olympics, as much as it was fun, I was also devastated at not qualifying for the long program just by one placement,” she said.

Her coaches have since rejigged her short program to improve her chances of a high score. “I don’t like to downgrade my technical, but if it gets the job done it gets the job done.”

Her next international appearance will be at the 2018 World Figure Skating Championships in Italy, from March 19 to 25.
