New society taking shape

The Sunshine Coast Youth Soccer Association (SCYSA) is able to provide an opportunity for many youth on the Coast to play the game of soccer through the collaboration of the various local governments.

Each weekend more than 35 games are played up and down the Coast. During the past few years the SCYSA board has undergone a review of the fields that are used by the association to determine strategies that will assist in how the SCYSA may participate in the field management process.

"Many associations have a fee schedule attached to their membership, while the SCYSA at this time does not have this requirement," said association president Norm Blair. "As we know, things are always evolving, and perhaps one day this could change."

One consideration that the SCYSA has embarked on is the construction of an artificial turf field to be located at Chatelech Secondary School. To date, many have provided support as preliminary work has and is being conducted to prepare the space for such an occurrence.

"The formation of a new society that will provide service to the broad spectrum of recreational groups on the Coast was spawned after an initial presentation to the school district in 2008," Blair said. "The SCYSA received funds to initiate this organization in a recent gaming application through the province of British Columbia. There has been considerable effort by many to bring momentum to the vision. It seems it may be the time to recognize these efforts and engage the community in the possibilities."
