A new season of lacrosse starts Monday on the Coast.

Organizers are looking forward to another exciting season at the Sunshine Coast Arena.

To help kick start the new year, the Sunshine Coast Lacrosse Association (SCLA) has adopted a new club name and colours.

The Sunshine Coast Rapids is the new name and the colours are two shades of blue and white. More information on this and other items can be viewed at sclacrosse.8m.com.

Another new event this year is a drop-in inter-lacrosse program at the arena, targeting younger players and those who want to try the game. Registration is available but not necessary. For $2 players can come out and play a non-contact game with minimal equipment.

"It's great exercise and lots of fun," said Jim Cooper, SCLA Rapids director. "Many people may not realize that lacrosse is Canada's national summer sport and we at the SCLA are committed to letting every child have an opportunity to try our game."

The drop-in program runs Mondays from 6 to 7 p.m. for ages 10 to 16 and Wednesdays from 6 to 7 for ages five to nine.Equipment is provided and certified coaches will run the program. Call Cooper at 604-885-8809 for more information.

"It looks as though Powell River will have its first season of box lacrosse this year, which is great news for us," Cooper added. "We are sending some of our coaches to their development day on April 23 to lend a hand and show our support. We are hoping to set up a schedule with them this year. It will be great for both clubs as we are both young associations and we can help each other build.

"We are also working on hosting a game of junior or senior calibre. The idea behind this is to let our players and community see how fast and exciting lacrosse can be when played at this level. We have just put the word out there and we have had some positive response so far. The executive has been working hard to make our third season more exciting than ever. "Because of generous donations from Construction Aggregates, Gibsons Building Supplies and other community members, we will be able to provide players with new jerseys this year, which will have our new logo on them."

Cooper would also like to thank Family Sports in Gibsons and Trail Bay Source for Sports in Sechelt for their help and support.

It's not too late to register and the Rapids are always looking for more players.
