The Gibsons Curling Club has welcomed a new ice maker this year as it begins its new season.
Gord Twanow, formerly head ice technician at the Parksville Curling Club, started in Gibsons Sept. 16.
Twanow and his wife Michelle are looking forward to getting to know the beautiful Sunshine Coast. Both love curling and the outdoors.
He started his career in Lethbridge when he was 16, and by the time he was 24, he had been appointed as head ice technician at Penticton Curling Club. During his 30-plus year career, he has worked at many national and provincial championships, among them two Briers (Canadian Men's Championship), one Scotties Tournament of Hearts (Canadian Women's Championship) and the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
Since arriving in Gibsons, he has been working hard to get the ice ready for the upcoming open house and registration week, Sept. 30 to Oct. 4.
The community is invited to drop in to the club, see the facilities and test out the new ice while you throw your first rock. New curlers are welcome.
This season the club will be offering daytime, mixed, men's and women's leagues as well as a Learn2Curl Fun League. Gibsons Curling Club is at 951 Gibsons Way. For more information, call 604-886-7512 or visit www.gibsonscurlingclub.com.
