In an effort to promote the game and their new indoor tennis facility in Sechelt, the Suncoast Racquet Club is hosting an open house this Sunday.

The open house, slated for 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., is an opportunity for the public to learn about lessons and programs available, membership opportunities with the club and to try out the sport under the supervision of club members and Tennis Canada certified coach Jacques Joyal.

"I think the big thing for us is people still don't know that we are here," Joyal said. "We opened in November, but I think some people have the impression that this is an exclusive club and not open to the public, which is simply not the case. This is a community facility, built by the community and should be enjoyed by the community. This is a very nice facility and those who have played here already say it is a joy to play on. We want the community to know that and to get involved with the club, build our membership, take advantage of our programs and above all, play a great sport like tennis."

The club has been in existence since 1991 and played at the Wakefield tennis bubble until the winter of 2004.

Shortly after that, the club began looking for an alternative site.

"We leased this lot from the District of Sechelt as it was earmarked by the District for recreation purposes," said club member Friedl Brudermann. "We also received $50,000 in seed money from the District. The project itself was $950,000. The support from the business community and in-kind support from other community donors and sources has been tremendous. We could not have this wonderful facility without all that help."

The club broke ground in April 2006 and officially opened the doors in November 2008.

"We had more than 150 people here for the grand opening," remarked club member Anne Elliott. "We would be thrilled to get that same kind of turnout on Sunday. We're all very proud of this facility. It's quite the achievement."

The club features two covered courts, there are male and female washrooms with shower facilities, an office, meeting room, viewing area to watch matches and a small kitchen area. The facility is also totally wheelchair accessible.

"We have programs available for everyone, of any age and any playing level," said Joyal. "Our goal is to get more youth involved, and that is reflected in the youth programs we have available for kids ages six and up. We also want to get more school kids involved and maybe have a high school tennis team."

Elliott said there was a teen tennis team many years ago, and that is something the club would love to see again.

"The open house is an opportunity for people to come in and play for free for half an hour, ask questions about the programs and really, just get involved in the club," added Joyal. "These courts are a blessing and this is a wonderful facility. It just needs to be utilized."
