Pull out the thinking helmets and put pen to jersey, it’s time to name the Sunshine Coast’s new junior hockey team.

The proponents behind the Pacific Junior Hockey League’s expansion to the lower Sunshine Coast are hosting a “name the team” contest from Oct. 6 to Oct. 17.

The new team is set to hit the ice at Gibsons & Area Community Centre in September 2024.

To enter the contest, one can visit the Sunshine Coast Junior Hockey Society website or visit Trail Bay Sports (Sechelt), IGA (Gibsons, Madeira Park, Wilson Creek), or Gibsons Building Supplies (Gibsons and Sechelt) and scan the QR code available at those locations.

“A sports team’s name should portray strength and create an identity. It should tell people where you’re from and who you represent,” said a press release from the new franchise’s director of operations, Rick Hopper. “It should create excitement and a ‘buzz’ in the community. It should have ‘marketing power’”

“This junior hockey team will be an integral part of the community, it’ll be something new for the community to unite around and celebrate,” said Hopper in the press release.

“There’s no better place to find creativity than on the Sunshine Coast, so we eagerly anticipate everyone’s ideas for a team name.”

Contest prizes will come from sponsors Trail Bay Sports, IGA and Gibsons Building Supplies.

A logo contest will follow the naming contest, said Hopper.
