Powell River U18 Kings edge Sunshine Coast Blues to open season

U15 and U13 teams also square off at Powell River Recreation Complex

Powell River U18 Kings edged Sunshine Coast Blues 2-1 on September 9 in the third game of a Coastal Cup series between Powell River Minor Hockey Association and Sunshine Coast Minor Hockey Association at Powell River Recreation Complex.

After Sunshine Coast took a 2-1 second period lead, Jeremy Pukesh equalized for Powell River with a shot from the point on a power play 42 seconds prior to intermission. Nathan Gruntman tallied the game winner for the home team with 6:02 remaining in the game.

Earlier in the day, U13 and U15 teams from each organization also squared off. Both games ended in 4-4 ties.

U15
Carter McDowell scored twice for the U15 Kings, who led U15 Blues 4-2 at one point in the second period. Cooper Lawry and Lucas Gruntman each scored once for Powell River.

Tyler Wing scored three of Sunshine Coast's four goals. Sebastian Gilfillan had the other marker for the Blues.

U13
Jasper Street, Reid Stekman and Cameron Milne staked Powell River's U13 team to a 3-1 lead in the second period, but Sunshine Coast's U13 squad outscored the home team 3-1 in the third to knot the game at four goals apiece. Street scored his second for the Kings, giving his Kings a short-lived, two goal lead.

Callum Pope had a hat-trick for the Blues. Owen Kelly scored once for the visitors.

Rematches take place today (September 10) in Gibsons to complete the series.
