After the Christmas break extended into February, the men's and women's soccer leagues returned to pitches that still had some snow on the sidelines last weekend.
In the women's league, Source All Blacks came out sporting new jerseys. After their match with IGA Blazers, they had a tie to go with the new shirts, as the game ended 1-1. Jenna 'Rainbow Warrior' Crozier sent in a cross to Kara McDonnell, who smartly smacked the pass into the net for the Source, while Blazers' Christine Campbell did the scoring for Campbell family this weekend, as she whipped a longball into the sidemesh. Xenichen Ya Yas nailed the net twice in their game with Gibsons Pigs, with goals from Miranda Joe who chipped the keeper and young Carrie Dixon who hit from a tight angle deep on the left wing. Pigs' keeper Daniele Heguy kept the score respectable. Tajeda Stewart scored twice and Trina Geisbrecht hit a single in Mayhem's 3-1 over Fusion. Andrea Aleong scored the lone goal for her side.
In the men's league, an undermanned Pender Harbour Bananas squad managed to keep Halfmoon Bay Sea Kayaks at bay, until late in the match, when backliner Mike Cowie left his defensive duties behind in search of a goal for himself. Jeff Wadge sent in a cross so perfect an overflying Canada goose almost converted it, which was tapped in by Cowie. Pender keeper Paul Van Wersh probably made 20 saves in the match. At Gilker, Coast Pro-gressive United edged IGA Selects 3-0.
CPU goals came from Kurt Vernon, Ted Chisholm and Dean Totten. Totten did double duty in the match, as he also had to manage swarming Selects strikers Bill Wilton, Eduardo Alvarez and Ken Campbell. Gibsons Bruins made their debut in the men's league, but unfortunately faced Gibsons Pigs United on a good day, and lost their match 5-2. GPU got two goals each from big Ian Marshall and Mike Brown. Dave Nanson got a second try after his penalty shot was saved, and tapped in the rebound. Bruins goals came from Mike Willis and Mike Sopal.
