Mayhem had it all together when it counted last weekend, knocking off Source for Sports 3-0 for the women's soccer championship.
The women's tournament began Saturday with snow and ended with spring on Sunday. The round robin took place at the two fields of Ted Dixon Memorial, wherethere were plenty of tight games, some culminating in shootouts.
First place league winners IGA Blazers saw the teams they had been trouncing all season step it up on the weekend, and after the two days, two shootouts kept the Blazers from the final.
Ya Yas also played well, with a shootout win over Mayhem on Saturday, but a loss on Sunday put Mayhem through to the final.
On the other side of the pool, Source for Sports had a shootout win over the Blazers, along with wins over Sita's Sistahs and Fusion, which then landed them in the final with Mayhem.
For the last 10 years, the women's playoff final has only ever taken place between a combination of Mayhem, Source and Ya Yas.
Source keeper, young Maya Schutz, had her hands full and her feet nimble facing Mayhem's strikers, and all three Mayhem strikes were expertly placed. After Reagan Cabral opened the scoring, Sara Bradshaw one-timed a volley that just caught the underside of the crossbar, while Jasmine Nebocat banged a ball across the goalmouth and in.
The second half saw Source coming on and Mayhem keeper Sydney 'Sid the Kid' Celli was sliding in the mud, running out punching balls and stretching her finger tips to keep Source strikers Jenna Crozier and Tara Sweet off the scoreboard.
Congratulations to Blazers on their league win and to Mayhem for their stellar tournament. Mayhem would also like to thank Grant Marshall for his devotion to their team.
